The Return of Flume

The simulation is really glitching. In a time where Shaq is a DJ and renowned DJs like Gessaflestein and Skrillex are making their comeback, it was about time for Flume to arise from his break. Since he finished touring for Skin, it’s been almost two years since we have seen music from him. In true Beyonce fashion, he dropped a whole mixtape for us with very little notice along with a visualiser to go along with it.

I highly recommend listening to the mixtape by watching the visualiser. It’s a mini-movie honestly that takes you on a trip. Literally all I could think of was how was Flume’s Burning Man experience based on this video. The concept, the details of each shot is incredible to go with this more experimental sound than we’re used to hearing from Flume.

You still hear some tendencies and effects that characterize himself as an artist, otherwise you get more experimental and trap bass vibes throughout this mixtape. It got me thinking if this is going to be the future of Flume or if this was just a project for him to do. It could be why it took so long for him to return because of hesitancies releasing more experimental sounds.

What I also missed admist this release is Flume posted a four part documentary series on YouTube. It covered his rise to fame and when he finished touring for Skin that gave more insight into his life and creative journey. There’s four more parts to be released that I think will talk about what happened from 2017 to now which I am really excited for. I love learning more about artists and seeing how they deal with growth, creativity, and more as they evolve.

What did you think of Flume’s mixtape? Do you think it was just a project for him to get out and he’ll go back to a more mainstream sound? Let me know I’d love to discuss further.

thanks for reading! xoxo, Ade
