The final review of my battle of the New Year’s is here! Rachel showed you the ropes on how to prepare for Snowglobe and that is exactly where she rang in her 2018. Watch and learn kiddos.
Snowglobe Music Festival is held annually at the community college in the heart of Lake Tahoe. This event is on the smaller scale with three stages: Main, Sierra, and The Igloo. I’ve gone to so many festivals where it can take up to 20 minutes of running across the venue to get to the next stage in time to see your favorite artist. Luckily for SG, the three stages are very close to each other and are designed in a way that there is no overlapping sounds from the other stages. More than half of our group had never been to SG before and kept asking me to describe it for them. It truly is hard to describe what you are going to experience after stepping through the gate. SG is also a leave no trace behind festival because of our lake and they keep to it making the grounds immaculate after 3 days of non-stop partying. The crew at SG is all about sustainability raising money and donating goods to local organizations and every year promise to plant over 100 trees in Lake Tahoe. Snowglobe is more than just a music festival and I love it all.
Snowglobe? More like Mudglobe.
Arriving to Tahoe it was a toasty 60 degrees when we checked into our hotel with a low of 25 degrees. May seem cold to those that are used to warmer weather, but for Tahoe this is way warm. The ski slopes were lacking so much snow you could see the dirt from the base of the mountain and the venue for SG there was not a single snowflake to be found. On a smarter tactic the SG crew covered the grounds in turf grass, but this ended up somehow making the grounds extremely muddy causing everyone to fall multiple times and shoes to be soaked, but we pushed through and had an amazing weekend. From stuffing our faces with pizza and chicken nuggets, the food was nothing too gourmet, yet hit the spot after dancing for 6 hours. Totems rocked the sky with Rick and Morty themes and one that reminded our mothers that we were fine. (“Mom I’m Fine”). Our group joined with another large group and probably had about 30 people sticking to the back left and rocking out to every set throughout the three nights. They had massage tents, igloos sponsored by Lyft that were actually heated and had charging cables, and a really cool light up rotating globe that was the main art attraction of the weekend. My last favorite thing that SG has every year is the ski jump. A legit ski jump. Decorated with lights and fireworks as skiers and snowboarders jump off and do some crazy tricks right next to the stage has to be something unique that no other fest has.
Favorites sets from this weekend?
First and foremost, SPAG HEDDY. This bass head here was very disappointed at the lack of dubstep on the lineup, but having just the man himself break my neck on day one was all I needed. This was my first time ever seeing him and boy did he not disappoint. My friends and I were wildin’ out the whole time while also getting side eye from people who just didn’t understand what headbanging was and why it is so much fun.
Switching it up from the EDM vibe, Khalid and Quinn XCII were so entertaining to watch and had my group and I singing along to every one of their songs they performed. Brownies and Lemonade took over the Sierra Stage day three with back to back (not b2b lol) sets by Falcons, Graves, a surprise b2b, San Holo, and ending with Jai Wolf. WOW. I cannot even express to you the vibes that were there during that 6 hour time where we parked ourselves there. Graves and Falcons threw down with some surprising dubstep, the surprise b2b was Manila Killa and also performing as Hotel Garuda. San Holo was absolutely beautiful my first time seeing him and Jai Wolf performing Indian Summer just left me in the feels all night and truly prepared me for the one and only Alison Wonderland.
MY QUEEN.
Alison is my favorite DJ in the entire world and when I found out that she was ringing in the new year I was ecstatic. There were some people who were skeptical of her counting down at midnight, but she blew everyone away. From slapping her ass and showing off her stretch marks to the lyrics, “.Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretchmarks” from Humble to her New Rules remix saying “2018 there will be no fuck boys” and ending her set chugging a bottle of grey goose as she walked off stage, Alison Wonderland’s set was hands down the best of Snowglobe. She’s always one to call out bullies and address mental health issues in her set while also throwing down hard as hell and ending it out with a big vibe. I truly don’t think I could have entered 2018 any differently than with her and a big kiss from a very cute guy 😉
Now I am not going to sugar coat this for you readers out there. Snowglobe is a really rough festival. Rough from mainly the people that go. All though this is an all ages festival, it mainly attracts groups of college kids to travel from San Diego, SLO, and San Marcos to make the 9 hour drive to Lake Tahoe. Since this is a festival and not a rave, “PLUR” does not exist. Although this acronym is used for trading kandi it is also used as a way to act and treat others at a festival. There was constant shoving and pushing in the crowds, more than any Insomniac event I have been too. During Alison’s countdown I had got shoved out of the crowd because of some very rude people. The one thing I don’t like about SG is they close mainstage at 11 pm the first two nights and then will have more sets after at the smaller stages. This causes the crowd to pack like sardines and shove their way through a small walkway to Sierra stage and The Igloo. This claustrophobic incident caused my best friend to have a full blown panic attack from the shoving and pushing that we ended up leaving the festival day one. No one was offering to help us get out of there, a guy was even trying to hit on me while she was crying. Soon she locked eyes with another girl in the crowd and the stranger helped make a path to get out.
I’m not using these examples to scare people off from SG but more of a warning on how the vibes are there.
This is my hometown. I will always love it and this festival, but after a couple years attending I think 2017 will be my last time at Snowglobe. Now onto some bigger fests in the upcoming years. 2017 SG was filled with amazing memories with the best group ever that I will never forget. To all those with Snowglobe on their calendars for 2018, I hope you have an amazing time with lots of snow and don’t forget to check out the lake and ski slopes while you’re in town! Happy 2018 everyone!
