With the hopes of amplifying Black voices in the EDM space, I’m sharing with you my favorite Black Bass and Dubstep artists. I hope you learn a little more about these artists that I know and love.
12th Planet
12th Planet is one of the first ambassadors to bring dubstep to the US. He throws tf down and I highly recommend checking him out if you haven’t yet. He owns SMOG label that has been around for over 10 years. He has had releases on Interscope, Mad Decent, Monstercat, and OWSLA. He has also been support on Skrillex’s mothership tours and played major festivals like Coachella, Lolla, EDC, Hard, and Ultra.
Favorite Set: Lost Lands 2019
Troyboi
T R O Y B O I (#iykyk)
Troy Henry got his start making beats in his kitchen on his MacBook and midi keyboard in the UK. He is a multicultural electronic music artist who has produced and remixed tracks for rap, R&B, and pop artists. I’d say he falls more in the trap sub-genre, but like the kind that gets your booty shaking. I saw him twice last year at Holy Ship! and Austin City Limits and he definitely gets the crowd going.
Favorite Set: TROYBOI in the Lab
DJ Diesel
I can’t not mention DJ Diesel AKA Shaq. He has blown up in the EDM community in the past couple of years. He had his dance music debut at TomorrowWorld 2015. He’s played Lost Lands, Decadence, Life in Color and more. Such great energy to bring to any festival and throws down a filthy dubstep set.
Favorite Set: Tomorrowland Belgium 2019 – W1
SAYMYNAME
Known as the godfather of hard trap. First, hit the scene in 2012 where he introduced the concept of hard trap. He has played EDC, Ultra, and other major festivals. Tons of collaborations with Mercer and remixed DJ Snake’s Propaganda which become his most well-known remix.
Favorite Song: Propaganda – DJ Snake (SAYMYNAME Remix)
Set to Checkout: Middlelands Virtual Rave-A-Thon
YehMe2
From Chicago, he used to be apart of Flosstradamus and left after 11 years to become YehMe2. He has paved the way for the future of trap music.
His sets are high energy. I haven’t seen him live, but I have watched a couple of his live stream sets. He’s been fully transparent about being a full-time father and partner to his wife which we love. He’s also been great about sharing his struggle with mental health, addiction, and finding happiness while on the road.
Favorite Set: Digital Mirage
Fransis Derelle
Born and raised in SLC, Fransis Derelle prides himself on producing innovative music of all styles incorporating electronic and hip hop. He has a more future bass type of sound. He’s been played by a lot of artists like Zeds Dead, Adventure Club, and Alison Wonderland. His remixes and originals have been featured by Proximity, Insomniac, Dancing Astronaut, and more.
Set to Checkout: Outerworld Vol. 4: Contact
Moore Kismet
15 years old dubstep producer that is on the RISE. I saw their set on Insomniac’s Hard Summer live stream and was blown away by how high energy the set was. They are also pansexual which means they have no preference for gender when it comes to sexuality. They are also non-binary which means they do not identify with male or female when identifying their gender (hence me referring to them using they/them vs. he/she).
Favorite Set: Moore Kismet for BackHARD Summer BBQ
