Alright all my Insta baddies, here’s the real tea on how to get the perfect Instagram at music festivals. I know there’s more to life than getting the perfect pic to post. BUT let’s be real here with all the planning and stress we put into our outfits, we’re allowed to make sure we get some good content in our fits. This one’s for the girls stressing over getting that perfect pic. I’ve created a formula that will help ya’ll this festival season. Some things to think about before is the hair, outfit, makeup and accessories you’ll have for the festival which I’ve got you covered in other blog posts and videos. So let’s get into this. Meet the B-L- Triple P – E.
Background
Find a dope background inside the gates, at your hotel or Airbnb. I always recommend taking some pics before you leave for the venue just in case you get so caught up in the whirlwind of the festival you aren’t able to get any pics at the venue. Once you get inside, I always find the bathroom, fill up my
Lighting
This is sooooo important and can make or break your photo. This depends on the time of day the festival is, but a good general time to take photos is when the sun is starting to set (hello golden hour!). If it is generally sunny because it’s the middle of the day, try and find a shaded area that will at least help from it looking like the sun is beaming into your eyes.
If it’s a nighttime event, try some pics with flash OR if you have two besties handy that can help you, have one person take the photo without flash and then have the other holding up a phone flashlight above you. I’ve seen some really great photos come out from this because sometimes the flash on a phone can wash you out; whereas, the flashlight helps illuminate you.
Picture Taker
I believe you have three different types of picture takers. You have someone like my father who takes one photo and that was your one chance to get a photo and you end up not liking it. Then you have your bestie who you love so so much, and she’ll take multiple photos of you BUT you’re blinking in half of them, they’re blurry and you just look straight up ugly in them. Then you have someone like my roommate Jess who takes all the photos and gets you at different angles and gives you direction on your posing. Find your Jess.
Be selective about who you ask to take your photo and just be honest with them about why this matters to you. I always tell the person I need a couple of photos in this outfit for content and they totally understand. Also, if you don’t have someone like Jess you can always tell the person “sorry can we just try one more time from this angle” and I’m sure they’ll understand. Offer to take photos of them in return and have the same amount of attention to detail that they do for you so they end up with bomb photos in return too.
Pose
It’s taken me some time to get comfortable with trying out different poses with my photos. I’m not one to practice in a mirror, but having mini photoshoots in my apartment for brands and having mini photoshoots with friends has helped me get more creative and comfortable with my body. Don’t be afraid to try out different poses so it isn’t just another photo of you smiling with hand on your hip (don’t worry I’m guilty of this too!).
Props
Whether it’s a cute accessory or something you find in the festival, having a fun prop like sunglasses, a cute hat, a totem, etc., can help bring the look together or add a dynamic piece to the photo.
Also, incorporate your friends into the picture like if you and your bestie are matching or your group has coordinated outfits. If you have a significant other, take a cute pic together to document your time together. If the festival has any fun characters walking around like at EDC and Electric Forest, you can totally incorporate them into a photo too!
Editing
The final step. Put a filter on that fire pic and call it a day. I personally edit with a preset on Lightroom Mobile app and then layer a preset of my own I’ve made in VSCO. I also use apps like Camly for fun trippy and colored effects. If you want to see a tutorial on how I edit my photos, let me know.
I hope this helps and I cannot WAIT to see all your fire pics this festival season. Have fun with it and don’t take it so seriously, my guidelines are here to help not stress you out. Follow me on Instagram @vibewithade for any festival pic
