Hello tribe!
I finally recovered from an amazing weekend at Freaky Deaky! It was a spooky weekend in Houston, Texas filled with amazing music and even better people. The vibes in Texas are always the best at festivals. I went to Something Wicked last year and Disco Donnie Presents decided to do a revamp and rebrand it as Freaky Deaky.
Overall Experience
Like I said the vibe of this festival was top-notch. I love the rave community in Texas because they are so fun and nice. Definitely adds to the whole vibe when the crowd is great. The grounds were very muddy, but from what Disco Donnie posted, they were way worse before we got there. If mud is my only complaint for the weekend, you know it wasn’t a terrible experience. We braved the mud and some people even rolled around in it.
Production
The production this year was definitely high quality. You had main stage called The Shrine which had like an abandoned church type of vibe. This was mainstage so all the stops were put out for this stage that housed Kaskade, Porter, Slander, DJ Snake and more.
There was the Crypt where the headbangers went to heaven with the most unique artists right now in dubstep and bass music like Zomboy, Adventure Club, Saymyname, Riot Ten and more.
Finally The Rising stage at first felt way smaller in comparison to the other stages and the design it had last year. I was a little big disappointed as I like to hangout towards the back of the crowd. Luckily since it was the house and trance stage, there was more room to dance. So as you were closer to the stage it definitely provided a better experience.
Finally the Haunted Hollows stage paved the way for local and up-and-coming artists to have a spotlight in this festival. Hosted by TRILLVO, this stage featured artists of all genres.
The Music
Before I mention my favorite sets from the weekend, I will say that every artist I saw brought their A game. The only artists I hadn’t seen before was Camelphat, Walker & Royce and Nora en Pure so the other artists I saw I had seen before. Each artist I saw topped any set I had seen previously from them. It’s cool when you follow these artists throughout the years and see them grow and create sets that stay true to them. My favorite sets from the weekend included Porter Robinson (surprise surprise), Chris Lake (*pretends to be shocked*), Slander and Camelphat.
Porter Robinson will always have my heart, but with no new music lately since Shelter I was interested to see how this DJ set would be. This was my 5th Porter Robinson set and 3rd DJ set. Each set has been different each time and this set was no different. The man opened with a SHELTER x THE THRILL MASHUP like what. I love DJ sets because you can see the other music that Porter is vibing to like San Holo, RL Grime, Petit Biscuit, etc. Can’t wait to see him for a 6th time at Decadence Arizona.
This was my 6th time seeing Chris Lake THIS YEAR. If you asked me who made 2018 their year, it would be Chris Lake. Each set he managed to top himself. I was more excited that my friends finally got to witness his set and see why I’m so obsessed with him. He had me and my boyfriend Ryan shuffling the whole time.
Slander and I were not in a good place. I saw them at EDC 2017 and was soooo disappointed by that set. It just didn’t feel like a Slander set, it’s hard to explain. I decided to give them another chance because Ryan was super excited to see them and I was not disappointed this time around. From the heavy hitting dubstep that had me headbanging to the feels train they put you on. This set was so many emotions, but it finally felt like a Slander set and was true to who they are as artists.
Finally, Camelphat had my heart this weekend. This set was all types of vibey I wish they could’ve played all night. I love techno and I love house so when you give a girl a tech-house set…phewwww I was in heaven. I highly recommend seeing Camelphat if you haven’t!
