Since my bank account can’t let me be at every festival all the time (one can dream am I right), I had this vision for Vibe with Ade. The vision is where I’ll have some of my friends give you a sneak peek into some of the best festivals across the country. I am SO excited to introduce my first ever guest blog post by my good friend Taylor as she attended CRSSD 2017! Enjoy!
Every fall and spring, CRSSD Fest at the Waterfront in San Diego, CA blesses our lives with a fire line-up and a few too many craft beers, and this past installment was no exception. When Flume was announced to play at CRSSD in the spring of this year, the festival quickly shot up on my “Must Attend ASAP 911 ALERT” list. While I couldn’t attend then, much to my dismay because Flume is for sure in my top 5. As soon as I found out Rufus Du Sol and Chromeo were headlining this fall, I really couldn’t hold back purchasing my ticket. The festival took place over two days, September 30th and October 1st and was ridiculously jam-packed!
The Festival
I’ll stop now to say this: if you’ve never been to CRSSD, make it a priority next time it comes around, EVEN IF YOU ONLY KNOW A FEW PEOPLE ON THE LINEUP. Don’t get me wrong, I love headbanging with the best of them to filthy drops and trap music (s/o to my number one babe forever, RL Grime), but there’s something super appealing about house/future bass/vibey/tropical music that makes my heart skip a beat. Now just add the ocean breeze, a 21+ crowd, and your best friends and seriously…all I kept asking myself the whole weekend was, why didn’t I do this sooner?!
I really didn’t know what to expect going into the weekend, I watched some recap videos to try to figure out what to wear and I asked a few friends who had been before what to expect but I don’t think I actually could have been prepared for how much fun I had. In my opinion, I think the best way to describe CRSSD, would be Coachella but smaller…and maybe even just a little tiny bit better, and I can’t believe I just said that because I love Coachella. I am a die-hard Coachella fan.
But there’s something to be said about being able to actually dance at a festival and not have to worry about being pushed around in a crowd that really just propelled CRSSD to the top of my list. I swear, my friends and I were only about 6 feet from the front rail for Chromeo and we probably had more room up there than if we had been standing in the back.
The Music
Alright alright, now for why you’re probably most likely here: the music. YOU GUYS, truly I did not see one set I didn’t like. The cool thing about CRSSD is that the stages are super close together. It makes it so easy to jump back and forth for when two acts conflict. I got lucky, this only happened twice to me. Instead of telling you reasons I loved every set, I’ll just run through my personal highlights!
First up, and I think my favorite set of the whole weekend, Elohim. If you’ve never seen her, I strongly suggest finding out where she’s playing next and buying tickets. She has the voice of a damn angel, and even cooler is that no one knows who she is. Elohim either sings with a mask on or with her hair in front of her face. She uses pre-recorded voices masked with a voice changer for when she spoke on stage. Her set rocked the Ocean View stage, and made me a fan for life.
My second, holy shit moment was for sure at SAINT WKND. I’ve been dying to see this kid since I first heard his remix of Chet Faker’s “Lover”. His tropical, deep housey vibes had me the most intrigued. Ge did not disappoint as he turned The Palms stage into a full-on dance party. Some other weekend stand-outs were Whethan since I have been in love with for a little more than a year. (seriously go see his kid on his Good Nights tour if you can!) Brothers Macklovitch aka A-Trak and Dave 1 of Chromeo, and one I truly wasn’t expecting to like as much as I did, Cut Copy!
Overall, if you like good music, good drinks, and good company I highly recommend attending CRSSD. You won’t be disappointed. I’ll be there dancing happily with a Stella in one hand, and mac n cheese in the other 😊
