I got invited by 1824 and Universal Music Group to get a sneak peek at the highly anticipated album, ENERGY, from Disclosure dropping August 28th. I got to listen to four songs off the new album and hear the creative process for how it all came together from Howard and Guy who make up Disclosure.
This 11 song album features singles we’ve all been bopping to like My High and ENERGY. I was truly excited to see what songs will be complimenting them.
Here is the full track list:
1. Watch Your Step (feat. Kelis)
2. Lavender (feat. Channel Tres)
3. My High (feat. Aminé and slowthai)
4. Who Knew? (feat. Mick Jenkins)
5. Douha (Mali Mali) (feat. Fatoumata Diawara)
6. Fractal (Interlude)
7. Ce N’est Pas (feat. Blik Bassy)
8. ENERGY
9. Thinking ‘Bout You (Interlude)
10. Birthday (feat. Kehlani and Syd)
11. Reverie (feat. Common)
I got a sneak peek listen of four songs off the new album: Watch Your Step (feat. Kelis), Lavender (feat. Channel Tres), Who Knew? (feat. Mick Jenkins), and Ce N’est Pas (feat. Blik Bassy).
Watch Your Step (feat. Kelis)
“You make me watch your step when you move. Now what you do is making me move with you.”
The first song off the new album has a groovy, funky house beat with catchy lyrics and vocals. Definitely can see myself shuffling to this.
Lavender (feat. Channel Tres)
“Is that lavender? I like lavender”
I am so excited they have a song out with the legend Channel Tres. His voice is so smooth and perfectly flowed with the iconic Disclosure drums and bass together. There’s a nice midsection build-up that goes right back into the groove I really liked along with the lyrics.
Who Knew? (feat. Mick Jenkins)
Disclosure mentioned with this song they were expecting Mick Jenkins to rap for this track, but it turned out he could sing as vocals for the track. They also mentioned it led to a more unorthodox structure because Mick is great at concentrating on rhythms and giving space where needed because of his rap background. I enjoyed the drum and bass type of rhythm that felt almost ethereal along with Mick’s vocals. This was probably my favorite track they showed us out of the four. It’s the perfect jam for when you just got back from a late-night out or on a nighttime drive.
Ce N’est Pas (feat. Blik Bassy)
Blik Bassy is a singer-songwriter from Cameroon and provided some awesome vocals that are more unconventional to what we’re used to. Disclosure described it as utilizing different gibberish from the different languages Blik knows. They were able to get the vocals in one take and really were able to collaborate to focus on the tone and melody. This song has a solid consistent beat and Blik’s voice is so smooth over it. I almost thought the song was over because they slow it down into almost an interlude type of deal. It reminded me of Tame Impala because it had this retro but modern sound to it that made it still a Disclosure song.
All in all, this sneak peek has me so excited for this album to drop. Be sure to stream and purchase ENERGY when it drops August 28th, it’ll be available on vinyl, CD, and cassette. I’ll have a full album write up coming soon so stay tuned. Thank you to 1824 and Universal Music Group for having me!
