I haven’t done an album review honestly since Vibe With Ade started, but I couldn’t resist writing one with an album drop like this. Disclosure released their highly anticipated album ENERGY on August 28th and it lived up to the hype and more.
Disclosure is an iconic duo from London that has been accomplished in the Electronic Dance Music genre. They’re in their 20s and have released two albums (Settle was released in 2013 and Caracal in 2015) prior that topped the U.K. Official Albums chart and received GRAMMY nominations for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
ENERGY
I was very curious what direction this album would go given their releases “ENERGY” and “My High”. I actually got a sneak peek of the album with a virtual listening event I was invited to where I go to hear Guy and Howard talk through four songs off of the album that were never released as singles. You can read that writeup from the event here.
As for the album as a whole, it’s truly remarkable and flows so well together from one song to the next. It’s soulful, vibrant, groovy and well dare I say energetic ;). There’s catchy lyrics, smooth baselines and calming ebbs and flows between the high energy songs. I felt like there was such creativity and balance between different instruments, vocal techniques and the classic Disclosure sound we know and love.
Some favorites of mine include:
- Lavender feat. Channel Tres – I’m a huge Channel Tres fan.
- Who Knew? feat. Mick Jenkins – I love the drum and bass feel to this song.
- Birthday feat. Kehlani and Syd – Kehlani’s voice on this is just *chef’s kiss*
- I was already obsessed with ENERGY and My High, but now I love where they were placed throughout the album. It just flowed really well for me.
Another song worth noting is Ce n’est pas with Blick Bassy who is an artist with Cameroon. Guy and Howard described the creative process for this one being that Blick blends the different languages he knows into a vocal gibberish that I thought was such a creative spin on the song.
All in all, this album is 11/10 for me. I can’t wait to see this album live when it’s safe to in America. I hope you enjoyed the album just as much as I did. It’s def a memorable one to remember for 2020.
